découpe d'après modèle :

I decided that I wanted to build TWO knives this morning. I decided that I would build the same knife in an Old School Style and a more Modern take.

We will see if I can pull it off in the time constrants.….. Hopefully I can get'er done! I have to work my weekend shifts at the ER so that will kill 2 of my days. So the time constrant is a BIG concern for me.

First the Modern interpretation. It is going to be a CPM S30V blade with synthetic handles... not sure exactly what yet. Making decissions on the fly.

Second one is the Old School version. It is going to have a 5160 blade with some nice bolsters and natural scales. Not going to divulge all the details on this one yet.…. It is super secret!

Here are some pics of work in progress...

Here I am drilling the holes in the 5160 blade.…

Image

Here I have the 5160 blade with the holes spotted and the profile scribed. It is ready to have the holes opened up and then it is off to the saw!

Finishing out the flats on the disk sander.
Image

Flats are finished and the 5160 blade is ready for heat treatment. I get to play with fire!! Dan Koster will be talking me through the heat treatment of the 5160.
Image
Image

While waiting on Dan to arrive at the shop I decided to rough out the tappered tang on the S30V blade. It is .025" at the tip!

Image
I wanted to try for a hammon line(Dan said it was ify with 5160, but said it wouldn't hurt). This is me applying the clay.

Grinding away on the tang of the 5160 blade!????? Have I gone crazy.….

That is a distinct possability! Ahhahahaha.….. (in my best maniac laugh)

Yes I think I may have been crazy all along. But grinding on the tang is not crazy it is part of my diabolic plan!

Putting in some mill time! I am actually using it for something other than a storage table! What am I doing??? Keep watching for a few more minutes.…

Is that copper? Looks like it.…
Image

I am making a copper wrapped tang. This is something that you don't really see anymore. It was popular in the 1960's and 1970's. They usually used brass or ns. I have never seen one with copper.

FIRE! Fire, fire, fire, fire.……

I think I might have been a pyro in a previous life!

Okay, just got done tappering the tang on the Copper wrapped 5160 blade. Here are the pics...
Setting the angles on the tappered tang.

Image

Ready to go to the 10" grinder.

Image

Grinding the hollow on the tang so it flattens much easier.

Image

Ready for the disk sander!

Image

Here the flats are finished to 320 grit straight from the disk sander. Ready to hand sand! WHAT FUN!

Image

Here I am rubbing out the flats on the blades.…. This change of pace is fun!
Image
Relearning why I don't do this too often..

GRINDER TIME!! This is what I live for!

Give'n it to it on a 14" wheel

Image

Here the blades are ready to go to the 400 grit belt and then hand rub out. Did not get as far as I had hoped today, but it was a GOOD day.

Image

Image

This was a tough shot! Did not quite get them held on a 90 degree angle, but close. The plunges are very close right now and will get the final tune on the 400 grit belt.

Image

Lets see what the micrometer says about these blades! I have been trying to get them as close as posable.…

Copper wrapped 5160 blade first.…

Image

Still the copper wrapped tang 5160 blade. If you have any questions take a look at the edge of the blank. On the 5160 blade you can see the slight decarb from the HT process. This is not present on the S30V blade that was heat treated in a controlled atmosphere kiln by Paul Bos.

Image
Image
Image

Image

The first thing I did was decide that I wanted the grind lines a little higher and more refined, so I went back to the 240 grit belts.
(le flingue est là au cas où la machine s'emballe)

Image

Finally making some progress! Got the grinds up where I want them.….
Image
Working on the 400 grit belts! After seeing the picture my dad reminded me that I had a problem learning how to ride a bike as I never would watch where I was going...
I told him I had to grind by feel.…..

Image

Unless working on perfecting my new two handed grinding style.….

Concentration this takes.…. (in my best Yoda voice)
Image

This was a daring move! Two handed and not watching..

Image

On to the 15 micron belt. Next step is to get the ground bevels hand rubbed out.

Image

Imagine the jingle playing in the back ground.…… Mr. Clean, Mr. Clean.….

Image

Okay, the flats and bevels are hand rubbed to a nice satin finish. It is now time to etch my "Krein Knives" Logo on the bevels.

Image

Here is a close up of the elctro-chemical etch process.

Image

Image

Now I have to clean up the logo's by hand rubbing them again! This will clean up any "fuzzy" edges and make them nice and sharp!

I am finally finished with the blades! I have the swedges ground in and hand rubbed out.

Here I am rough grinding the swedge. I do this on a smooth 10" wheel with the knife held vertical.

Image

Image

Those 5160 sparks are hot as hell on the finger! Weird how D-2 and S30V sparks are not hot at all!

Ca ressemble plus à la coutellerie que je connais que les deux précédents reportages.

Les deux autres couteaux sont très chouettes, mais on voit bien qu'il s'agit d'un autre univers...

Time to make the bolsters! These should be a LOT of fun.….

First I filled the oversize pin holes with brass rod so I could easily spot my holes and make them the correct size.

Image

Here I have the holes drilled in the brass and the shape drawn out on the tang. I have drilled the copper bolsters and have them ready to band saw.

Image

Cutting the double black Ebony linen micarta for the bolsters of the S30V knife.

Polishing the fronts of the bolsters.…

Putting the high polish on the fronts of the Copper bolsters...

Here is a close up of the fronts of the bolsters...

Next I have to dovetail the bolsters and handle material.…
