Ivan Campos, artisan brésilien

Messagepar aliaswonder » 22 Oct 2009 12:39

Bojour!

Thanks for posting these pics and for introducing me to the people here, Michel.

Here are a couple more pics of pieces I have finished recently:

This is what I call Hot Blooded Scandi, a compact knife with heavy Scandinavian influence and a full flat grind. This is the prettiest one I have made so far.

I have finished some other knives for orders and will post them later.
I am also working on a new fixed blade with copper colored blade, the first fixed blade I made with this finish, in fact, and it is turning out very nice with a wrapped handle and some wooden details. Pics later!

I have had this blade ready for a while and when I went about finishing it this week I thought: "Not slab handles for this one. Let´s make it something special!" And special, and very unique, it has become.
It is my first fixed blade with this finish, wich I have only used on a few folders so far. I think it goes well with a certain primitive look so that´s what I have aimed at.
Blade is 1/8" tick 5160 steel, 4" long and flat groud and the handle is made of sisal rope wapped and resin soaked with two black jacarandá wood menuki.
Don´t know about the sheath yet, but would like to do something that matched the style.

Just finished this one and I absolutelly had to share this one you, buddies!
It is a gyuto, one of the many Japanese styles of kitchen knives. The blade is 8 7/8" long, forged out of 3mm thick 52100 steel (from a bearing race) with a convex edge and a "brute de forge" finish.
For its handle I choose a very nice piece of birch I ave just received and let it on its natural color so the translucent rings of the wood can be fully appreciated and the bolster is black polised horn.
I am very satisfied wit the results of this project. It is super well balanced and has a great feel in the hand. Japanese kitchen knives have been a focus of my interest latelly and this result sure makes me want to make some more!!! :D
Here are some pics of its construction, first the rough forged and ground blade and then the assebling of the handle. I use two brass pegs and this is quite a bullet proof assembly after the glue sets on.

Thanks for the comments
Michel, you have an evil mind!!!!
Felipe, my style has been changing quite a bit lately but I can say that it is turning towards knives that, no matter the purpose, are functional and have a certain bit of "old time" to them. I really like to think that each knife I make WILL be used and kowing that they will be contributing to make their owner´s life easier is part of the fun for me. For the same reason I try to keep them affordable as most everyone will not use a super expensive knife.
About a year ago I lost a good friend who was your typical old-time town blacksmith and would fix and make anything at the forge, including knives, wich were highly prized by their owners. Thse were not super expensive nor did they have a fantastic finish but tey made their owners (wich were in most part users, not collectors) happy and made him happy, too. Nowadays that´s where I try to take my work, and it s working to bring me and my customers the same results, fortunatelly. :-)

And, by the way, that´s what I see a lot of on the work of French craftsmen here on the forums and that´s been a fantastic source of inspiration for me.

Finished this one yesterday after seeing some folders with this same frame style here on the forums.
The frame is 1,5mm thick brass with jacarandá wood handle slabs and the blade is 1070 steel, about 2 3/8" long and rubbed on the flats and left dark on the rest.
I used a screw pivot pin on this one - a litle departure from the style but sooooo much an advantage that it is worthwhile. I won´t use conventional pivot pins anymore, unless by request after having tried these.
I think that´s it for the week as I had to stop a dog fight an hour ago and got bit more than a few times in the hands more than usual until I could get them to let each other go, so I´ll take a day off, maybe two, from the shop.

I came back to Bauru and Reginopolis many times and to SP a few years ago and had good time at the Festival da pinga in Parati ! But, in fact, SP had really changed ! Very far is the time I was quietly walking in SP streets from Rua Para to Praça da Liberacao … Hoje presisa ter 2 guarda-corpos :D
When I was younger, I slept on the beach in Ipanema and came from Rio to Brasilia, then from Brasilia to Iguaçu and back to Bauru "de carona", and I guess it's not possible anymore yet !!!
I will try to visit your show.
Say Hello to Ricardo Vilar, Rodrigo and Luciano from François da França thup

I didn´t know you liked pinga, but that´s another good reason to come to the SPKS as I aways keep a bottle of it from a local distillery on my table!
